Select the files you wish to backup

Ordinarily, you will have an idea as to which files are important to have backed up. Typically, customer databases, accounting/financial software and E-Mail are the three most important areas to consider. Other specific types may include source code or design documents.

You do not need to backup your operating system files or program files as these items can be reinstalled if required.

Please note, that onsite installation and configuration is available within Greater Metropolitan Sydney, with phone based support provided outside this area. All you need do is inform our consultant as to the location of your data and they will configure the software together with providing a report on which files will be backed up.

Select the file folder on your computer that contains the information you wish to backup, right click and then click Properties. A screen similar to the following should appear - click the image for a larger version:

The value contained within the section labelled Size is the one we are most interested in. Make a note of it as you will use it in just a moment. If you have multiple folders you wish to backup continue this process and add the values together.

How much storage space do I require?

To simplify this part of the process we have provided an example to illustrate.

Simple Backup

In this example, files are backed up on a daily basis with the most recent version of a file being stored on the backup server.

The most recent version of a file is always retained even if only one copy exists.

Total Space Required is calculated based upon the following:

(Total size of files to backup less 20%)

The assumption here is that a 20% reduction in total file size can be achieved.

On average, file compression should yield a reduction in size of between 20% and 60%. We have chosen to be conservative.

Please note, that whilst some competitors charge for the data transferred to their backup server, we don't. In one case, a competitor charges as much as 8c per megabyte of transferred data. At IT Keeper our backup service offers unlimited data transfers.
